The 2026 Play Pulse Report

At Papaya, we’ve always believed that being a "player" is a mindset - it’s about approaching life with presence, choosing growth over drifting, and finding meaning in the effort of improvement.

To better understand this landscape, we’ve collaborated with the National Institute for Play to launch the inaugural 2026 Play Pulse Report. This comprehensive study, which included a 12-month survey of 15,000 U.S. adults, explores how play is shifting from a casual pastime into a vital tool for emotional resilience and personal mastery.

Key Insights from the Report:

  • The Drive for Mastery: For the vast majority of players, the primary motivator for entering digital competition is now skill-based play and fair competition, far outweighing external prizes or incentives.
  • Universal Motivations: Despite differences in age or background, most players share the same core drivers: mental clarity, focus, and the satisfaction that comes from consistent improvement.
  • Restorative Structure: Reliable, rule-based environments provide a sense of "emotional safety," allowing players to fully immerse themselves in a state of flow that supports overall well-being.

"Play for Real" is our commitment to building a world where skill matters and the journey of improvement feels truly rewarding.
